Pioneering team in building and operating smart factories at Samsung
12/02/2023Samsung Electronics Vietnam (SEV) factory has a factory area of nearly 100 hectares, the production process includes many stages. There, there is a department with a total workforce of only 91 members, but with the mission to be the pioneer team in building and operating the factory in the smartest way: the Automation Department.

With a vision that automation will become one of the most important components in future industrial production plants, in addition to the smart factory strategy of the company’s leadership, in January 2014, the SEV Factory Automation division was established with an initial total workforce of 61 members. Currently, this number is 91 members divided into 4 sub-divisions serving the following objectives: Receiving technology and machinery transfer from the parent company; Support production workshops to realize innovative ideas into real projects to improve labor productivity; Improving automation capacity for Vietnamese engineers/technicians.

With the mission “Smart factory means turning all production stages in large factories like SEV with smart elements“, The Automation Department has devised a recruitment and training strategy to ensure the smartest operation of the factory with the most effective human resources. Facing the strong development of the industrial revolution 4.0, process automation control devices are getting smarter, not only capable of doing what has been programmed but also able to calculate and give very predictive control actions as well as create highly intellectual products. That requires the human resources of the Automation department to also be high-quality human resources. Therefore, the department focuses on input recruitment to training to improve the professional capacity of employees in the working process. The staff recruited for the department are graduates of majors related to Automation, Mechanics, Mechatronics – Electronics, and Information Technology of technical universities.
After being selected, depending on the major studied, the new employee will be arranged to participate in training courses to improve professional capacity in both theory and practice by the instructions of key personnel of the department. After completing the training courses, new employees can actively find projects and implement them if the project is effective for the company. In the first project, the department will continue to appoint experienced employees as advisors to support new employees until independent projects can be implemented. During the working process, employees continuously participate in training courses in the field of automation organized by the Samsung High Technology Training (SATTI) department. In addition, the Department also cooperates with the SATTI department to open technical training classes located in the factory to spread basic automation skills to all people in charge of equipment in all parts of the factory, thereby helping to accelerate the transformation of production stages into smart ones.
Achievements in terms of people and work
The qualifications and skills of the members of the Automation Department are not only proven through products that are online robots, self-propelled robots (AGVs), LCiA machines, etc., which are operating day and night at various stages in production workshops but also expressed through the awards won at skill competitions of different sizes and levels, including the Gold, Silver, and Bronze awards at the Technical Skills competitions held by Samsung globally. Most recently, at the Samsung Vietnam Skills Contest 2022 for the first time held for 6 manufacturing legal entities of Samsung Vietnam, gold award for both skills in this competition (Automation Skill, Jig Design Skill) belongs to the member of SEV Factory Automation Department.
Thanks to the skillful leadership of management levels and the efforts of each talented individual, the Automation department completes hundreds of projects every year, installing hundreds of machines including robots, AGV, and LCIA … into the production chain. In 2022 alone, the division saved the Company about $11 million.
Recognizing the importance of automation as a prerequisite for the construction and operation of smart factories, each member of the department has been actively improving their capacity every day in order to fulfill their mission to automate all stages of production, for a smart, growing, innovative, and creative Samsung.
